Paper Cutting - Scherenschnitte - Wycinanki - Paper Scuplture - Classes
The art of paper cutting began in the Orient with the sheep shearers high in the mountains who used the art as entertainment to pass time. In the 1600's the art spread to the European countries. Polish peasants, who had a tradition of decorating their cottages with hand-painted motifs, began using paper cuts to create colorful cutouts called Wycinanki. German cutouts, usually black mounted on white, are called Scherenschnitte. With the movement of people to the New World, the craft spread. I learned paper cutting from my maternal grandmother.
